Flight Unlimited III is a flight simulator for Microsoft Windows systems. It made its world debut on September 17, 1999. The game was developed by Looking Glass Studios, known for titles like Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss and Thief II: The Metal Age. Flight Unlimited III was even published by gaming giant Electronic Arts.
The game received overall positive reviews from critics. It has been praised for its user-friendly controls, dynamic weather, and its attention to detail. However, the game came out within months of the release of Fly! and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000. While critics believed Flight Unlimited III was rendered more smoothly than its two main competitors, it massively undersold. This led to the game not only being a commercial flop but also contributing to Looking Glass Studio’s bankruptcy and closure.
Flight Unlimited III Premise
In this three-dimensional simulator, players can take control of virtual versions of real-world aircraft. Players must use visual and instrument navigational tools like variometers and primary flight displays. You will also have to deal with other AI-navigated planes in the sky and pay attention to air traffic control to avoid collisions. While there is a real-time weather system, players can choose what type of weather they want to encounter before starting a level, like cold fronts or thunderstorms.
The main two modes in the game are Quick Flight Mode and Challenge Mode. In Quick Flight, players can simply navigate the skies and focus on flying safely. In the Challenge Mode, your abilities are tested with objectives like finding Bigfoot, rescuing hikers, stopping a theft, and more.
But if you were worried about feeling overwhelmed, the game has 26 different lessons in the tutorial for you to choose from. And you get to pick what weather you want to fly in at the start of all gameplay.
The game has the five planes from the previous game and five new additions to the series. The available planes are listed below.
- Lake Turbo Renegade
- Stemme S10
