Microsoft: No Kinect Support? No App

None

In their continued efforts to shoehorn the Kinect sensor, in some capacity, into every nook and cranny of the Xbox 360 experience, Microsoft has included a Kinect requirement for any future apps on the system. All developers must include support for the hands-free motion sensor in their apps.

Avatars? Take’em or leave’em. Facebook integration? Microsoft leaves it up to you. But if users aren’t able to navigate your application with either gestures, voice, or a combination of the two, your app will not be making its way out onto the marketplace.

On the upshot, Microsoft is doing their part to smooth out the process, giving developers tools to make these voice and/or motion controls less of a drain on the time that they want to put into actually designing their app for the Xbox 360.

Microsoft is looking for a consistent experience across their console. They want those who use the Kinect to not have to remember a bevy of different terms or gestures for similar functionalities in multiple programs, in essence developing a sort of core “Kinect lexicon” that will serve as the basis upon which other apps from other developers can build, but which they shouldn’t alter.
