Microsoft Wants to Eradicate Lag with Dedicated Servers

Microsoft hopes to stamp out those painful moments (where lag disrupts your gameplay) by having dedicated servers for all their online Xbox One titles.

Lead Program Manager John Bruno posted an article on Xbox Wire describing just how the new dedicated servers (via the new Xbox Live Compute service) will improve development and the online experience for gamers.

“This is perhaps the most obvious example of what is possible with Xbox Live Compute – dedicated servers! If you have played a lot of multiplayer games, you know that playing on dedicated game servers has advantages over peer-to-peer gameplay. With server-based multiplayer gaming, not only can more players play the game (think hundreds of players simultaneously), the gameplay will be much more reliable for the players. No more host migration interruptions, suboptimal experiences for the host, home network NAT constraints, or player cheating! Additionally, Xbox Live Compute can be utilized to persist game state so that your squad can live to fight another day without losing any progress.” Bruno said.

If you’ve ever been locked in those late-night FPS encounters, where you unload into your opponent just for him to smile and keep coming, you know how blood boiling lag can be. It can literarily mean the difference in the game, so having dedicated servers is definitely a move in the right direction to make this thorn in gamers’ sides a thing of the past.
