MMO Betas Galore

MMO Betas Galore

None

The open beta is an almost inevitable stage of MMO development at this point. The data gained by allowing players worldwide to stress test one’s servers is a tremendous benefit, as is the marketing opportunity gained by allowing prospective customers to get some hands on time with your product before they invest in it. It never hurts that, if they like it, they’ll tell their friends.

Coming up over the next couple of weeks are open betas for, first, TERA Online, which aims to replace the hot-bar style of MMO combat with engaging, action-based gameplay that demands twitch reflexes and situational awareness, and Guild Wars 2, which expands on the original title’s formula with multiple playable races, a new race/class skill system, and a world that changes for you depending on what quests you’ve done.

TERA Online’s beta weekend runs from April 20 through to April 23. It’s the traditional sort of open that allows most anyone who signs up to participate. Guild Wars 2’s event, though, runs later this month from April 27 to April 29 and is only open to those who have pre-ordered the title.
