NetherRealm Sees Fighting Future In PS Vita

Fighting games really haven’t changed much since the old days of playing Street Fighter II in the arcade. Though the graphics have gotten better and the game mechanics have become more refined, the fundamental way we interact with the game (with a controller or joystick) remains constant. However, Hector Sanchez, producer of the Mortal Kombat franchise, thinks this might all change with one important new device: The Playstation Vita.

According to Sanchez, portable gaming systems fit the fighting game mindset perfectly. “The essence of competition in bite size… is really, really good, because not everyone has twenty minutes for a FIFA match, but a fighting game can be over in a couple of rounds,” Sanchez said in an interview with Gamasutra. “It really fits in this on-the-go generation coming up right now.”

Of course, fighting game pros would tend to disagree. Much of the fighting game community sees a tournament quality arcade stick as an absolute must-have when playing any serious fighting game, and the Vita, of course, is not compatible with the arcade sticks on the market. Some gamers, though, are already working on a solution to that problem by developing fighting stick docks that your Vita can plug into, though that kind of defeats the purpose of it being “portable.”
