Splatoon has had a hell of a run. I can honestly say that I’ve never played a game that was so faithfully and so consistently tended to by its developer and publisher. Every time you log into the game, the Squid Sisters will give you the latest news and then send you on your way, urging you to “stay fresh.” In the real world, every month Nintendo has unveiled new gifts for us in the form of updates, new maps, new weapons, and new gear; they’d toss it like some kind of rejuvenating pixie dust all over the raw, vulnerable baby-body that is their new IP, exclaiming with each handful, “Stay fresh!”
Now Splatoon is all grown up. It’s proven it has what it takes to endure as a future powerhouse IP in the Nintendo universe. Just as a baby bird eventually must leave behind the providence of its mother, so too must Splatoon venture out on its own, complete and whole with its maps and weapons. Its final weapon – the Custom Hydra Splatling – comes tomorrow. All in all we ended up with 74 highly versatile weapons in Splatoon, which is outstanding. It’s not clear if this is the final update for the game, or simply the final weapon; we may yet have a map or two headed our way.
