No Unified Online Network for U

No Unified Online Network for U

None

Though Nintendo has pledged to make online gaming on the Wii U a reality, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently confirmed that they won’t be doing that with a single Nintendo network. Instead, they’ll be leaving it up to third-parties to create their own online forums. This approach sounds like it will be nearly identical to the online method used for the 3DS, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Games like Super Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, have all used the 3DS hardware and third-party online structure to great success.

However, what this also means is that the Wii U still won’t have a persistent achievement or friends system, and voice chat is probably off the table for most games as well. Of course, anything can change, since we have another year before the console’s release. Still, if you’re hoping for an online experience with the Wii U comparable to what we’ve seen on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, right now it doesn’t look like you’ll get it.
