Nolan North Adds Real Pain To Uncharted 3

Nolan North Adds Real Pain To Uncharted 3

Orson Welles, while filming his seminal Citizen Kane , tripped and broke his ankle during a famously emotionally charged scene. He continued filming despite the injury, and that scene, that outburst of anger, is seen today as one of the most powerful moments in an already strong film. That said, I doubt Nolan North was thinking of one of Welles’ few dips into method acting when he fell off his bike, flew over the handlebars and broke two of his ribs. Two weeks later, North was over at Naughty Dog, doing motion capture for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Players have seen Drake in pain before. Uncharted 2, in fact, seemed predicated on doing as much harm to Nathan physically and emotionally as was humanly possible to endure, then going at least a step or two further. For the third entry, though, North says that Drake’s anguish is genuine, coming from an actor who was, at the time, nursing two ribs that “actually snapped right off [his] sternum.”

Add Nolan North to the list of actors whose injuries helped define their performances, from Orson Welles in Citizen Kane to Mark Hamill in The Empire Strikes Back . Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be out November 1, exclusively on the PlayStation 3.
