Oculus Rift Won’t Support Mac Until It’s Good Enough

The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift will be out before you know it, and gamers everywhere will soon dive head-first into the world of virtual reality. Unless, of course, they own a Mac. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has been the biggest cheerleader for the Rift, and he wants everyone to get excited about the tech. As enthusiastic as he may be, he’s not going to beat around the bush when it comes to why the Rift isn’t catering to Macs in any way. “[Rift support] is up to Apple. If they ever release a good computer, we will do it.”

Ouch. He does have a point, though. The Rift requires some serious GPU power, as well as ample ram and CPU power. A computer needs to be able to crank out stunning visuals at extremely high frame rates or else users will start to feel sick. As of now, Apple just isn’t making products capable of this. “You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn’t match our recommended specs,” Luckey said. “So if they prioritize higher-end GPUs… we’d love to support Mac. But right now, there’s just not a single machine out there that supports it.” That’s all there is to it. If you’re a Mac owner who wants to get in on the ground floor of the VR craze, you better start saving for a Windows PC, or else look forward to the PlayStation VR if you have a PS4.
