Overwatch Will Cost You, but the Additional Content Won’t

If MOBAs were outlawed for 2016 I wouldn’t shed a tear. We have more than enough of them, and only a very select few are worth playing. The majority of these games are free-to-play, typically charging players for the currency or resources needed to unlock additional heroes, map packs, weapons, and skins. Until recently we just assumed that Blizzard’s Overwatch would be the same way. After all, Hearthstone was a tremendous free-to-play success.

A recent developer update revealed that Blizzard actually plans to charge for Overwatch and include all of the heroes with your initial purchase. Whether or not they will be unlocked from the start or unlocked gradually as you progress remains unclear, but we do know you won’t have to pay for them. So what about post-release maps and additional heroes? Will we be paying for those? Apparently not; Jeff Kaplan mentions in the update that future heroes and maps will be patched in, free of charge.
