Fortnite is a massive, cultural phenomenon that has grown well beyond the niche of the “gamer” audience. Not only has the game generated well over a billion dollars in a year, but $100 million of that is going towards jump-starting esports competition. Instead of fighting it, some parents are embracing their kids’ interest in Fortnite . Is it inspired by potential money-making opportunities? Who knows. But according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, some parents are hiring tutors to help their kids earn some precious Victory Royales.
Fortnite tutor services have cropped up on freelancing websites and are running in the neighborhood of $10 to $20 per hour. One parent who spoke to the Wall Street Journal said they paid about $50 for four hours of tutoring. Part of the motivation seems to be social pressure to be good at Fortnite , since it’s so dang popular. Sounds like for kids today, struggling with Fortnite skills can open them up to teasing from their peers.
Fortnite tutoring seems to certainly be helpful, as one of the interviewed parents spoke to their kid nailing more wins than before, after some lessons. Hopefully this doesn’t turn to stories of the bad end of parental talent-pushing down the line. In the meantime, people who know what they’re doing in Fortnite may be able to make extra cash!
