PETA Targets Mario

PETA Targets Mario

None

As many longtime gamers will remember, the Tanooki suit has its roots in Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. The suit makes its return in Super Mario 3D Land, which just came out on Sunday, but this time, PETA is ready to put up a stink.

PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, have attacked video games before for their portrayals of animals or animal products, such as meat. In addition to pin-up pornography, one of the group’s newest tactics to convert the non-PETA masses has been small flash games. Generally, each game is based on an existing, popular title, particularly one that offends their sensibilities in some way.

As such, PETA has created a “Mario Kills Tanooki” website, which includes a flash game called “Super Tanooki Skin 2D.” The site features a Tanooki-suited Mario holding a Tanooki head, standing in a pool of blood. The game itself has more in common with Canabalt than Mario, as one controls a skinned Tanooki as it chases the fur-wearing Mario. The graphics evoke Super Mario World, but everything is twisted and violent in appearance, from the hill-tops in the background to the coins, all draped in blood and Tanooki flesh.

Will this turn more people into vegetarians and vegans? I don’t know for sure, but I do know that I could really go for a burger right about now.
