PlanetSide 2 Engine Working Its Way Into Other MMOs

PlanetSide 2 Engine Working Its Way Into Other MMOs

It’s the scale of PlanetSide 2 that really impresses. While other MMOs have featured large, seamless worlds filled with NPCs, monsters, and other players, PlanetSide pits players against one another on grand maps littered with complex battlefields and does so without abstracting its combat. It’s a first-person shooter through and through.

It makes sense, then, that its engine, which senior art director Tramell Isaac said can fit 2,000 people on a server and more than 200 on screen at once, would find its way into other projects of a similar scale.

As such, Sony Online Entertainment intends to use the PlanetSide 2 ForegeLight engine for future MMOs, given that it is a solid, high-performance base from which to build. As Tramell points out, while PlanetSide 2 is a demanding game, it also has top-tier visual fidelity. Games that do less with their visuals will still be able to avail themselves of its scale without breaking the hardware bank.
