PlayStation 4K Confirmed… Sorta

Last week rumors were swirling about a possible upgrade for the PS4. This is right off the heels of a discussion we’ve been having about Microsoft proposing a new paradigm wherein the console generation as we know it ceases to be, giving way to iterations and upgrades for our current-gen consoles instead. It’s an interesting thought, but it seemed far-fetched until now. Eurogamer and Digital Foundry have independently confirmed that the PS4.5 is a thing.

Apparently, it’s being called the PS4K as of now. Initial rumors indicated that this would be a mid-gen upgrade for the PS4 capable of playing games at 4K resolutions. We’ve learned that Sony’s R&D labs have prototype devices, but sources hint that even with the extra processing power and beefier GPU, the console wouldn’t be able to crank out games at 4K natively. So why are we calling it “PS4K?” I have no idea. What also remains unclear is whether this will be a brand new model, like the slim PS3, that we’d have to go out and buy. With over 36 million PS4s out there, I can’t imagine Sony would expect the majority of owners to go buy a brand new PlayStation console unless the upgrade was more-than-marginal, so maybe we’ll be looking at some kind of acceleration unit that we plug in separately? Who knows, but when we find out more you’ll be the first to know.
