PS Vita Moves Fast In Japan

PS Vita Moves Fast In Japan

None

The PSP has always had a dual life. While it struggled to gain market share in North America, it was tremendously popular in Japan, where its portable editions of Monster Hunter helped it to cement a place on the sales charts week after week. Europe, too, enjoyed Sony’s debut handheld attempt. Now, the electronics juggernaut is bringing its successor to bear, the PlayStation Vita.

And the Vita is already shattering expectations in Japan. Two major online retailers, Amazon Japan and Yodobashi, have already sold through their pre-order allotments and are no longer taking orders for both the WiFi and 3G editions of the handheld. Amazon’s site, in particular, tells users that the item “is no longer available,” which is language they’ve used in the past to indicate that an allocation limit has been reached.

In fact, Sofmap, Biccamera, and Joshin have all sold through their allotments as well, making up the bulk of major Japanese electronics retailers. It’s an auspicious start for Sony’s ambitious new handheld.
