PS4 Has A Set Launch Date, But Sony Isn’t Telling

When the PlayStation 4 was announced in February, there were a few things Sony kept under wraps. One of those was the console itself. While the new controller has been on display, the actual box that gamers will be plugging into their televisions has not been shown. The other is the release date, which Sony has said will occur in at least one territory this coming holiday season.

Internally, though, it appears they already have a solid target. In an interview with EDGE, Sony VP Michael Denny said that “[they] know [their] launch date.” It isn’t clear whether he’s referring to a specific day or a targeted window, but the confidence of the statement seems to indicate the former.

The PlayStation 4 is certainly on a very different release arc than the Wii U. The Wii U was unveiled at E3 2011, over a year before its release, with both hardware and software were on display. It was also shown at E3 2012 with actual, in-development games in a playable state, before it finally launched over the holidays. The PlayStation 4, meanwhile, will be going from reveal to release in under a year.

Is Sony rushing its new console to the market in order to get a leg up on Microsoft or did they simply keep their console under wraps until it was near enough to completion that they could time its release like this?
