Rumor Round-Up: The Next Metroid, PSP 2, Halo 4, and more!

The Rumor Round-Up summarizes and highlights the most important gaming related gossip over the past week. This weekly article, in conjunction with the Week in Review, will keep you plugged in and in-tune.

According to ars technica, not only will the Pro model of Xbox 360 get a $50 price drop, but the 20GB Arcade/Core model will be discontinued and a 60GB model will be announced at E3. This information came to the site via a communication from a “trusted source.” Here’s what the communication stated:

“At E3 Microsoft will make an official announcement that we are dropping the 20GB pro console to $299… As we launch the 60GB SKU throughout July, the 20GB SKU will DISCONTINUE. You will see the new SKU on your 7/1 price list.”

Sony filed a touch screen-based, portable device with the U.S. patent office on January 21, 2008. On June 26, 2008 the application was made public. According to the filing, the inventor is listed as Phil Harrison and the application simply patents touch screen technology for portable devices. The text along with the filed images, seem to indicate that a new PSP or iPhone killer is in the works.

Rumors have been swirling around Nintendo’s first party offerings to be presented at E3 since the Big N announced they have big things in the offing. Two interesting bits of circumstantial evidence point to the next Metroid as being a “definite maybe” for E3.

First, Retro Studios recently redesigned their website and has accentuated the fact that they are now hiring industry talent. Second, if you jump to the Metroid official website, an error screen will grace the splash page. Are they getting ready to launch something new? These clues, raring their heads just two weeks before the big dance, puts a new Metroid at the top of the Nintendo A-list.

According to SarcasticGamer, a trusted source within Bungie has stated that Halo 4 is already in full development. Furthermore, gamers can expect a wow announcement to be made at E3. I don’t know what’s more newsworthy; the fact that Halo 4 is in development or that Microsoft has selected Bungie to work on the project? We’ll have to wait a couple more weeks to find out for sure.

Thanks so much everyone and we will see you next week!
