Sega Changes Focus, Lays Off Workers

Sega Changes Focus, Lays Off Workers

Sega hasn’t exactly had the best of luck in game development or publishing recently. Its most recent flagship title, Sonic Boom , was regarded as one of the worst games of last year. As a result, Sega will restructure, putting as many as three hundred jobs at risk and relocating Sega’s San Francisco studio to Los Angeles.

The restructuring will be pushing Sega away from the console business. Instead, it will focus on PC and mobile gaming. In a statement, the company said “SEGA has positioned Digital Games, particularly smartphone and PC online gaming, as a growth area and has determined to implement the following measures in order to constantly post profits by improving management efficiency while promptly promoting redistribution of management resources.”

Sega is set to lose a lot of money this year. It is expecting $34 million in profit, as opposed to the $260 million in profit it made last year. Though Sega has said that its development studios will not be effected, it’s publishing branches will, which may involve taking on fewer new IPs in the future.
