SEGA Wants to Revisit Traditional Sonic Gameplay

SEGA Wants to Revisit Traditional Sonic Gameplay

For a while now, the Sonic franchise has seemed to be on its last legs. It feels like SEGA has refused to admit this, though, and has been forcing the once iconic blue hedgehog down our throats. It now seems like they are looking to take Sonic the Hedgehog back to his roots.

According to gonintendo.com, SEGA Europe Marketing Director has said, “SEGA has publicly apologized to the fans as the quality of the console games in the Sonic franchise hasn’t been acceptable over recent years. It’s been tough translating that iconic sidescrolling 2D experience from the 90s into 3D but Sonic is still huge for us so the new games will be more inspired by how it played in its heyday.”

This move isn’t unprecedented by SEGA, considering the release of Sonic Generations ; a game that mixed the old with the new in varied stages. Sonic 4 also seemed to be an attempt at getting back to the series’ roots. And SEGA has surely been aware of fan’s demand for a more classic version of Sonic all this while.

It’s hard to not take this report with a grain of salt. Even if SEGA does finally take this approach and offers up unadulterated 90s gameplay, there’s no guarantee that the games won’t simply feel dated. We’ll just have to wait and see if they can figure out what to do with their mascot.
