Sonic 4: The Freind, The Physics, The Feel

Sonic 4: Episode 1 was billed as a return to 2D form for the Blue Blur, but the community received it with shaking fists rather than open arms. Complaints ranged from its handling of the physics engine to its level design, but, most of all, fans complained that it just didn’t “feel” right. It was unfavorably compared to the 2D segments in the more recent Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations titles, raising the question of whether Sega would continue with the supposed main-series sequel’s production or just write it off in the face of their greater success elsewhere.

There’s a new teaser trailer out, though, which not only promises the “rebirth” of classic villain Metal Sonic, but also the return of Tails as a sidekick character.

In a subsequent interview, digital brand manager Ken Balough, with his Tails-inspired facial fuzz, explained that Episode 2 will, based on input from the fans, include a revamped physics engine (he specifically cites that Sonic will no longer “stick” when he hits walls or immediately go from ball form to standing when he starts up an incline) and a new graphics engine.

It will also be available on a wider variety of platforms: the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Android, Windows Phone 7, and iOS. It’s very possible that both episodes will be coming to the PC, as Episode 1 has been spotted in the Steam registry, but it’s odd that there’s no mention of the Wii, since that was one of the consoles to receive the first episode.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 will be out in 2012. Mr. Balough was no more specific than that.
