Sony Breathes Life Into the Playstation Vita

Sony Breathes Life Into the Playstation Vita

None

The rumors are true. Formally unveiled at Sony’s E3 press conference tonight, the Playstation Vita is the official name of the high-tech successor to Sony’s Playstation Portable platform. “Vita means life,” said Kazuo Hirai, the Playstation executive going on the outline the system’s technical specifications: two analog sticks, multi-touch OLED touch screen, back-panel touch screen, six-axis motion controls, and both front and rear cameras. He associates it with “life” in part because the handheld is designed to “interact with the world around you,” becoming as much a part of your daily routine as your cellphone or laptop.

Connectivity is the theme, whether through friend lists party chat or “Near,” the service that allows you to connect and play with others around you or share trophies and recommend games. In keeping with this theme, the Vita will come not only in a wi-fi enabled edition, but also in a 3G enabled model, with service exclusively from AT&T. The portable will hit store shelves this holiday season, the wi-fi only model retailing for $249.99 and the 3G model for $299.99.
