The Vita Gets Smart

The Vita Gets Smart

None

The PlayStation Vita is adding some smartphone-esque functionality to its already expansive suite of features and applications. Revealed today during Sony’s Gamescom press conference, it appears that both Skype and foursquare will be coming to the high-end handheld.

During Jim Ryan’s features presentation on the PS Vita, images for both services flashed on the screen behind him. Skype support is to be all but expected: both the PSP-3000 and PSP Go possessed Skype capabilities, at least for voice chat. With its new front camera, though, it’s possible that the Vita will actually allow for face-to-face conversations with one’s friends, family, and guildmates. If it runs on the 3G network, on the 3G-enabled Vita, it effectively turns the handheld into a powerful smartphone. On the more awkward, economics side of things, Skype is now owned by Microsoft, which is Sony’s direct competitor in the console market. How will this affect that?

On another note: foursquare. Since the app is tied to one’s GPS coordinates to validate check-ins, does that mean that it will only be available on the 3G model? With the Vita expanding in capabilities day-to-day, the system is looking more and more like a bridge between smartphone technology and traditional gaming systems. Is it a necessary link? Time will tell.
