Sony To Focus On Games, Confirms 10,000 Layoffs

In a new press release, Sony has announced that they will be refocusing their efforts in the coming year on games and the gaming industry. “Sony is positioning digital imaging, game and mobile as the three main focus areas of its electronics business and plans to concentrate investment and technology development resources in these areas,” said the press release. “By growing these three businesses, Sony aims to generate approximately 70% of total sales and 85% of operating income for the entire electronics business from these categories by FY14.”

Sony highlighted the PlayStation 3, Vita and the PSN as its core platforms, which seems to confirm that they will be pushing the Vita more than the now out of date PSP. The release also said that Sony would be “enriching” the PSN by offering many more games and subscription services. Perhaps these are the first few steps toward a PS3 that is more focused on digital distribution.

Unfortunately, whenever a company shifts its focus, layoffs are bound to happen and Sony is no exception. “As a result of these measures, Sony estimates that the headcount across the entire Sony Group will be reduced by approximately 10,000 in FY12” said the press release. This isn’t good news for those working at Sony, although the release did promise that the company will “consider various measures to secure continuity of employment for employees at their new destinations.”
