THQ’s decent into bankruptcy has been a rocky one indeed. The company had originally arranged a sale of its IP. However, THQ shareholders forced the company to auction off its IP in pieces. One of those IPs is the upcoming South Park RPG, The Stick of Truth.
However, South Park Studios isn’t ok with this. They submitted an objection to the proposed sale of the South Park IP, stating that THQ doesn’t have the right to auction off the publishing rights for The Stick of Truth. Rather, South Park Studios believes that they should be able to buy back the rights, and choose another publisher for the Obsidian developed RPG independently of THQ’s bankruptcy processes.
However, THQ argues that South Park Studios had an exclusivity agreement with them, and inside that exclusivity agreement is the ability to auction off the IP, should they so choose.
What does this mean for the future of South Park: The Stick of Truth? For now, we don’t know. The game is still slated for a March 5 th release, but depending on what happens in these proceedings, there is a small chance that the game’s release will be effected.
