Steam Machine Can Become A Viable Third Option In Next-Gen Race
CEO of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford makes the point that the Steam Machine venture is nothing more than a curiosity at this point, without a killer app to seal the deal. When speaking to GamesIndustry International , he said: “Valve hasn’t given gamers a reason to need or even want its product,” and that it would take a special kind of “announcement” to “really help us all understand the necessity of their invention here. But we all know that product would probably have to start with an H and have a 3 at the end, and it would sound like ‘Half-Life 3.’”
Well, almost as if it received the memo directly from him, Valve recently filed a trademark for what one CheatCC staffer calls “the holy grail”–Half-Life 3 . Now, filing a trademark doesn’t mean the game is a go, but it’s a step in the right direction. A game like Half-Life , which is Valve’s signature product, is what it would take for a venture like a new gaming-system launch to be successful. It’s a franchise that people know; they’ve wanted it for ages, and it could be just the thing that would make someone think twice about investing their money into a Sony- or Microsoft-based system. It seems Valve’s intent is to not abandon its PC roots, but to try and bring the PC experience to your TV.
If Valve expects to compete in a next-gen race, I seriously hope it understands just how important Half-Life 3 (or a game like it) is to its future.
