Sony and Gearbox Talk about Valve and Its Steam Machines

Sony just did the obligatory “I’m watching you” gesture in Valve’s direction, stating that even though nothing it’s announced recently has been what it considers a game changer, it can’t afford not to watch their progress. When speaking to Eurogmaer, Fergal Gara of Sony UK said that “In this market you’ve always got to expect some broadside disruptive technologies to come along, and it seems like a potentially good example of that,” and, “We have to keep an eye on Valve and many other competitors.”

With the recent announcements of its Steam Machines, which will run a proprietary SteamOS and feature its own custom controller, Valve has made it clear that while everyone is watching the “big two” when it comes to the console launch this holiday, Valve intends to carve out a presence as well.

CEO of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford is less impressed, explaining that without a must have title, Valve hasn’t given gamers a reason to need or even want its product. When speaking to GamesIndustry International, he states: “I would be thrilled if Valve announced a product that I already knew I wanted that was designed to use their three newly announced components and that could not exist but for those three new components …that kind of announcement would really help us all understand the necessity of their invention here.  But we all know that product would probably have to start with an H and have a 3 at the end, and it would sound like ‘Half-Life 3.’”
