Tekken Head: “Necessary Elements” Shouldn’t Be In Paid DLC

None

NAMCO Bandai producer and Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada has stated that he “would maybe quit” NAMCO if given the choice between including paid DLC of “essential” aspects in future Tekken games and leaving the company.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Harada reaffirmed his previously adamant beliefs against making key content such as playable characters part of paid-for DLC.

“When you look at DLC, whether paid or free, a lot of titles have it on the disc, it’s not that unusual,” he said. “I’ve been saying that, at least for Tekken, regarding techniques, characters, and stages, these three things won’t be charged for, even if they are DLC.”

Harada went on to reveal that his employers at NAMCO Bandai have been in talks with him about the concept of premium DLC for a while.

“Actually this is something my bosses have been asking me for quite a while now – what are our plans for DLC? How much money can we make? They are a company, obviously, in it to make money. So it’s something I’m continually asked even now.

“But I haven’t changed my stance. If you’re making a fighting game, all of the elements necessary to enjoy it should be on the disc, or should at least be available for free.”

Harada does note that he and his company are looking into paid-for content for the upcoming console version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2. However, if it is to be implemented, the producer says that it would have to include items that aren’t crucial to the game’s core package, citing previous Tekken games’ soundtracks and ending movies as potential examples.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is set to release for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this September, with a Wii U version of the title also confirmed for a later date.
