Thatgamecompany Raises $5.5M To Go Independent

Thatgamecompany, the developer behind such PSN hits as Journey, flOw, and Flower, has officially severed its exclusive ties with Sony and announced that they will independently release their own future titles on multiple platforms.

The dev’s long-anticipated move comes thanks to $5.5 million in funding from Benchmark Capital, a venture capital firm based out of California.

Studio head Jenova Chen says the move “enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact.”

Nevertheless, Chen says he’s still thankful for his company’s past partnership with Sony. “We are extremely grateful to Sony and the many players who put their faith in us. Their support has turned Journey into the fastest selling title in PSN history.”

As for what the future holds for TGC, Chen says that a new game is in development, but that no details about it can be shared at the moment. He does say, though, that it will be multi-platform, and that more details will be coming “soon.” Either way, Chen believes his next title will continue TGC’s vision of creating games that everyone can relate to and enjoy.

“We make games for human beings, not just gamers,” Chen proclaimed. “Young, old, men, women, and from all countries. We want to change the concept of what a game is and show society what a game can be.”
