The Wii U Emulator Cemu Is Making Rapid Progress

The Wii U Emulator Cemu Is Making Rapid Progress

Emulation is tricky business. I’m sure you understand, however vaguely, how it works; you’re basically simulating the hardware and OS of your favorite home console on your PC and using that to play that console’s games. We’ve had really solid NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis, and PlayStation emulators for a long while now, but not all emulators run smoothly. The Nintendo 64’s infrastructure has proven really difficult to replicate, for example, and N64 emulation still isn’t perfect. In fact, the most common Gamecube and Wii emulator (Dolphin) runs much more reliably.

Cemu is the next big thing in the emulation world. Cemu is a Wii U emulator, and due to the Wii U’s similarities to the Wii, developers have been able to make some really great progress with it. Version 1.4.0 of Cemu was released this week and it proves that faithful Wii U emulation is right around the corner. In the video demo I’ll link below, you can see that Super Mario 3D World runs better than ever. It might not look like much to you, and the lighting is all over the place, but the fact that this is running anywhere near 60 frames per second and isn’t crashing is remarkable. I’m betting by the time Nintendo’s NX launches, Cemu will be a reliable Wii U alternative.
