All right, folks. I’ve been trying to ignore this all day, but it keeps popping up in my feeds. “Rumors swirling of October 21 NX reveal!” Everybody seems to be picking this story up. Even the International Business Times ran a story on it. Where could this rumor have started? Is it yet another leak from an anonymous source that we have no way of verifying? Actually, it’s even worse than that.
The vaunted source of this information is Squish Turtle, a gaming blog that appears to have been resurrected from the dead three days ago – which explains why I’d never heard of it. One of the few entries on this site is an opinion piece that claims Nintendo will reveal the NX on October 21. The reasons? Because it’s the five-year anniversary of the first Nintendo Direct and because Nintendo often announces things in late October. That’s it.
Now, I don’t blame writer Tynan Muddle of Squish Turtle for this internet kerfluffle. The piece is clearly labeled “opinion” and nowhere in it does he claim any sort of connection to official Nintendo information. He’s simply putting out a fun guess, like many of us internet denizens do when we’re waiting on a game company to release long-desired information. Apparently a few news outlets were so starved for information that they decided to call this guess a “rumor.” Look, folks, I could extrapolate an NX reveal date from a numerological interpretation of the word “Yoshi” and have just as much truth behind me as this Squish Turtle article.
Here are the facts: Nintendo has not announced a Nintendo Direct for October 21. Nintendo has no set schedule for Nintendo Directs. Nobody from Nintendo or with connections to Nintendo has suggested that the NX will be revealed on October 21. Feel free to point and laugh at anybody who cites Squish Turtle as a valid source of insider Nintendo information. I’m pretty sure Mr. Muddle is laughing, too.
