Tomb Raider Did Not Meet Square’s Expectations

Tomb Raider Did Not Meet Square’s Expectations

Recently, everyone has been going nuts over Tomb Raider. The Lara Croft reboot has caused controversy in gamer and non-gamer circles. Still, the game is undeniably popular. 3.4 million copies have flown off the shelves within the last four weeks. Unfortunately, this is not good enough for Square Enix.

According to Eurogamer, sales of Tomb Raider and other Square Enix titles were not enough to meet the company’s sales projections for the fiscal year, which closes in a couple of days. While official numbers for Square Enix’s expectations were not given, we do know that Square expected North American sales to excel over European sales this year, which they did not.

Square Enix has changed quite a bit since its early days. Instead of making blockbuster RPGs, it now is funding projects from other companies. Perhaps this is part of the problem?

Square Enix has said that they will have a huge Final Fantasy announcement this year at E3. Perhaps that will be the start of Square’s much needed rebound.
