Torneko’s Great Adventure, also known as Torneko no Daibouken – Fushigi no Dungeon, is a Japan-only RPG released in 1993 by Chunsoft. This title is the first game in the Mystery Dungeon series and the first spin-off of the Dragon Quest series. The game was promoted extensively in Japan with a high-budget commercial. It was marketed with the tagline, “The RPG that can be played 1,000 times.” The game was reviewed well and was even placed on Famitsu’s top 100 games list in 2006.
The Premise of Torneko’s Great Adventure
The game follows Torneko, a weapon merchant. Torneko has one dream, to own his own shop and be the greatest weapon merchant ever. So Torneko set out on a journey to make his dream come true. The gameplay is closer to a roguelike than a traditional JRPG. It uses randomized dungeons and effects to stay true to being “the RPG that can be played 1000 times.” While exploring dungeons, players collect items and fight monsters found in the Dragon Quest games. Once leaving the dungeon, you can sell items found and improve your home and shop.
