Ubisoft Announces Flashback Remake

Ubisoft Announces Flashback Remake

Flashback was ahead of its time. A 2D side-scroller, it featured action and platforming, but did so in a way more akin to Prince of Persia than to the typical platformers and beat’em ups of the day. It had an actual story, ripped from the pages of 90s cyberpunk, and asked its players to proceed carefully and thoughtfully. Most who experienced it probably did so on the Sega Genesis.

Its sequel, Fade to Black, was a more typical third-person shooter, and is best forgotten.

Now, Ubisoft is remaking the original Flashback, and tethering it to the Unreal engine. The first trailer is certainly violent and explosive, but those concerned that it will eschew its traditionally thoughtful and deliberate approach for fast-paced explosions and set-piece action sequences should rest easy: the same core team as was behind the original game is handling this remake. Expect it to hit the PSN and XBLA this year.
