In an interview with development studio Naughty Dog, Game Informer was, well, informed that the studio is likely done with Uncharted . Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is on the horizon, but after that Naughty Dog is moving on. The series has been a bg deal for over ten years now, and Nathan Drake’s story is done.
Evan Wells, Naughty Dog’s Co-President, said, “I would say that Naughty Dog doing an Uncharted after [ Uncharted: The Lost Legacy ] is unlikely. I would never say never, but we’ve got The Last of Us Part II on our plates and there’s so much other stuff that we want to explore. It’s be hard. If we magically had that two-team, three-team studio, sure – it’d be great to keep doing it. We really love the franchise, but the studio has limited resources and lots of other ideas. I’d say the likelihood is low.”
Naughty Dog is in a unique position in that it doesn’t have to lean on franchises to keep its bills paid. The Naughty Dog brand is where the value is ultimately, over the Uncharted or The Last of Us . After The Last of Us Part II , Naughty Dog could scrap that series too andd be perfectly fine. This kind of clout means creative freedom, and clearly the folks working at that studio want to take advantage of that position. Good for them.
