Virtual Reality Support Coming to Apple Hardware

Virtual Reality Support Coming to Apple Hardware

During the Worldwide Developers Conference hosted by Apple, the company announced MacOS will officially support SteamVR and external GU enclosures. In a demonstration, Apple showed the Vive HTC running on a MacBook.

Per Apple, the ability to support VR comes with the new Metal 2 performance boosts, the new Mac hardware and a big, new update coming to MacOS. In a press release, Apple states, “Leading VR companies are joining Apple to drive VR innovation on the Mac with features coming later this year.

Valve is optimizing their SteamVR platform for macOS and enabling connection of the HTC Vive headset, while Unity and Epic are bringing their VR development tools to MacOS.”

While no pricing was announced for GPU enclosures, Apple did pair this announcement with a new line of iMacs and MacBooks. The new MacOS update will be called High Sierra, which will launch this fall for free in the usual MacOS update fashion.
