Wii Gamers Actually Play Games

Wii Gamers Actually Play Games

None

With consoles practically becoming entire home entertainment systems, gamers are using them not only for games, but for all their entertainment needs. Nielsen Media Research has recently released some figures pertaining to how much time game console owners actually spend playing games on their system. Unsurprisingly, the Wii leads in this category, with gamers spending 69% of their time with the console playing games. By comparison, Xbox 360 owners spend 62% of their time playing games, and PlayStation 3 owners spend 49% of their time playing games.

These findings actually make a lot of sense, as the Nintendo Wii doesn’t have many non-gaming features beyond the Opera-powered web browser and Netflix streaming, which means when people boot the system up, they are unlikely to do anything else. The Xbox 360 is in a similar situation, though it does include support for regular DVD playback, which may explain the slight decrease in game-playing time. However, the PlayStation 3 has plenty of extra features to keep gamers busy, including Blu-Ray DVD playback, digital video playback, Netflix streaming, and an internal browser, which all offer compelling options for gamers besides actually playing games.
