Wii U Home For The Holidays

Wii U Home For The Holidays

Nintendo’s enigmatic new console has been getting some press lately for remarks about its power and its potential as a high-definition console. The veracity of these comments isn’t beyond reproach, but there is a reveal that has come straight from the horse’s mouth.

We’ve all known that the Wii U is slated for a 2012 release, hitting stores before the end of the year, but a recent statement from Satoru Iwata holds that the Wii U will launch in the big four territories (United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan) in time for the year-end season.

That crucial year-end season, the holiday rush, is the prime time for gaming sales, traditionally beginning as early as Black Friday (and, in recent memory, creeping earlier and earlier) and stretching straight up through Christmas. During its initial launch window, the original Wii got a tremendous boost from holiday sales, during which it was in notoriously short supply as it flew off shelves. Obviously, Nintendo wants a repeat performance, but, with details on the console still scarce and E3 a few months away yet, will they be able to build the momentum they need by the time the holidays roll around?
