Wii U Plays Your Wii Games… Begrudgingly

None

Though it will not actually be miffed should you wish to use your shiny new console to play a current Wii title, the Wii U will not upscale those titles to play in a higher video resolution. In a best case scenario, this means that you’ll be playing Wii games, on the Wii U, in 480p, with anything higher reserved as the sole dominion of native Wii U titles.

Furthermore, the Wii U will not be backwards compatible with the Gamecube or its accessories. Current models of the Wii U console, as displayed on the E3 show floor, possess four USB ports and an SD card slot, but no legacy controller ports or Gamecube memory slots, lending hardware credence to Reggie’s already iron-clad statement. With a new Smash Bros. planned for the system, might some saintly peripheral company deign to offer a Gamecube to USB controller converter? One can certainly dream.
