Will Non-Gamers Become the Minority?

Will Non-Gamers Become the Minority?

There was a time when being a gamer was kind of a dirty word. Now, it’s much better respected, but not quite as mainstream as movies or music. However, one former industry exec feels that’s destined to change.

In a recent interview, Jack Tretton (former head of PlayStation) states the time will come when the tide turns and gamers will find equal footing among other forms of entertainment. “I think the thing that’s so exciting is gaming is not limited at all…I’m a futurist, I’m saying that there’s no longer people that don’t game. Everybody games just like they watch TV and do a lot of things that you consider mainstream entertainment…In the near future, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who’s never played a video game.” He touts.

Tretton also took a moment to address the current console race, as his former namesake is currently winning out against its Xbox One rival. Surprisingly, Tretton doesn’t share others view that a PS4 dominated marketplace is necessarily a good thing. He reveals that, “A world where there’s only one successful console manufacturer is not…a healthy world.” Tretton believes you need, “…multiple people bringing multiple ideas and technologies to bear. I think it’s great to have strong players like Nintendo and Microsoft in the business. Ultimately, every company in the business benefits if they’re successful. I think everybody’s rooting for them whether they work there or not.”

Speaking of which; we’ll bring you more on the latest sales figures regarding Microsoft’s redesigned Xbox One console (in light of its recent price drop) as they become available.
