Xbox LIVE Accounts Hacked And Sold

None

It happened to Susan, and it could happen to you: there are individuals out there obtaining the login information for Xbox LIVE accounts that don’t belong to them and using them to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of Microsoft Points with the account’s attached payment information. In Susan’s case, it happened twice and resulted in the loss of $366.06. She is adamant that her login credentials were not obtained through phishing. She also did some investigation into the thieves’ process.

According to her blog, the thieves purchase a Gold family plan after accessing the account, then buy excessive numbers of points, which they transfer to other dummy accounts that they’ve also attached to the Gold family bundle. These dummy accounts are then sold online, with instructions that they be used quickly and that the seller isn’t responsible for the points disappearing, if they do.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this situation isn’t so much the hacking itself as Microsoft’s response, which has, in Susan’s case, been ineffectual and disconnected. It wasn’t until days after she was told her account was locked that the fraud department actually managed to do so, and more money was stolen from her in the interim.
