3DS Outpaces Early Wii Sales

3DS Outpaces Early Wii Sales

None

Anyone remember the absolute madness that surrounded the launch of the Nintendo Wii all those years ago? Personally, I recall waiting outside a Walmart early in the morning in a line at least fifty people long, simply because someone had posted online that it was supposed to receive a shipment of the hot-item console. When they finally let us in, they lined us up and told us that they had just received four units. People waited regardless, though, in hopes that one of the first four people would change their mind, write a bad check or see their card declined.

It’s fairly incredible, then, that the Nintendo 3DS has, according to a press release from Nintendo of America, actually outpaced the Wii’s first nine months of sales. Even taking the massive price cut the handheld received into account, it’s an amazing feat, and one driven in large part by Nintendo first-party properties. High numbers have been reported for Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 as well, though Monster Hunter 3G is holding its own in Japan.

For a while, the 3DS was something of a handheld pariah, its sales seemingly lacking, interest unstoked, and a library of games that produced more yawns than excitement. That appears to have turned around, but can Nintendo keep the momentum going? Further, with the Wii U ostensibly hitting shelves this year and the gaming public mixed-to-negative on the new console’s touted features and potential price, can Nintendo pull off a second coup?
