Rock n’ Roll Racing is a 1993 combat-based isometric racing game developed by Silicon & Synapse (now better known as Blizzard) and published by Interplay Productions. Its original releases came on the SNES and Sega Genesis, although it would later be released as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection in 2021, bringing the game to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Overall, the original release reviewed better on SNES than Sega Genesis, with the latter suffering from worse graphics and sound effects. However, the SNES version was very well received by gamers and critics alike.
Rock n’ Roll Racing Premise
Rock n’ Roll Racing is played from an isometric perspective, with four racers facing off across a variety of track, each with four laps. The handling of the cars is key to the gameplay, with players needing to navigate tight turns alongside hills and dips placed carefully around the tracks.
However, it wouldn’t be very rock and roll without a little action. The game also features vehicle combat, with every car on the track having its own weapons to fire at opponents. Power-ups are also available to pick up throughout the race, which only adds to the chaos. On top of this, the tracks are littered with mines, which can destroy your car and set back your progress.
Throughout the main story, you’re able to upgrade your vehicle between every race, giving you better equipment to survive the next track. These upgrades range from more resistance to attacks, to stronger weapons, and even more.
Progression throughout the game is directly linked to your performance on the racetrack. Each race win awards points, and you need to earn a certain amount before you’re able to move on to the next track.
Rock n’ Roll Racing Main Characters
As a racing game, Rock n’ Roll Racing doesn’t quite have enough time to get caught up in the characters or the lore. Instead, it takes a black-and-white approach with Heroes and Villains pitting against each other on the race track.
Rock n’ Roll Racing Heroes
The Heroes in Rock n’ Roll Racing are the playable characters. Six of these are unlocked from the start, while the remaining two have to be unlocked over the course of the game. Here are all the Heroes the game has to offer:
- Snake Sanders
- Tarquinn
- Jake Badlands
- Katarina Lyons
- Ivanzypher
- Cyberhawk
- Olaf
- Baelog the Fierce
Rock n’ Roll Racing Villains
On the other side of the aisle, Rock n’ Roll Racing features a total of eight Villains, who serve as the AI opponents throughout the game.
- Viper Mackay
- Grinder X19
- Ragewortt
- Roadkill Kelly
- Butcher Icebone
- J.B. Slash
- Rip
- Shred
Rock n’ Roll Racing Titles in the Series
Unfortunately, Rock n’ Roll Racing never quite did well enough to spark an entire franchise. While one sequel was released in 1997, it was met with middling reviews and essentially killed the potential for more titles in its tracks.
The fact the game was included in the 2021 Blizzard Arcade Collection shows that Rock n’ Roll Racing hasn’t been entirely forgotten. Still, we’re not holding our breath for a new entry into the series any time soon. Nowadays, Blizzard has long moved on to bigger and better things, with many critical and commercial successes under its belt. If Rock n’ Roll Racing is ever to return, it’ll likely be in the hands of another smaller developer instead.
- Rock n’ Roll Racing (1993)
- Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt (1997)
- Blizzard Arcade Collection (2021)

How Do I Use Game Genie Codes For Rock n’ Roll Racing?
To use Game Genie codes in Rock n’ Roll Racing, you need one of two things: a Game Genie cartridge, or an emulated version of the game. In the modern day, Game Genie cartridges for SNES and Sega Genesis games are increasingly difficult to get hold of, so we’d recommend doing this on an emulator.
Boot up your emulator and load up Rock n’ Roll Racing. Then, find the Cheats menu within your chosen emulator and enter one of the codes above. Most emulators will support Game Genie cheats by default, so this shouldn’t be an issue. After this, you should be good to go!
