The latest twisted property from American McGee, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, is a free-to-play action-RPG in the Diablo vein. It draws from both Japanese mythology and the classical tale of Little Red Riding Hood. The developer, Spicy Horse, launched a Kickstarter campaign a week ago, after development funds dried up, and has since managed to raise a quarter its $200k goal.
The project has also taken another big step; Akaneiro has entered open beta. Effective immediately, interested gamers can create an account on the website and jump right in. The current beta cycle runs until January 16.
The timing is intriguing. With the Kickstarter still underway, a playable look at what the finished product will offer could entice those on the fence to open their wallets and fund the project. If it works for them, it’s possible we’ll see a similar marketing tactic from other future Kickstarter projects.
