AMD Leaks Millions Of DiRT3 Keys

AMD Leaks Millions Of DiRT3 Keys

None

It has become a relatively common practice for video card manufacturers to include some type of freebie with their cards. Many companies like AMD and Nvida attempt to entice customers with the promise of a free game.

Well, the folks over at AMD have a bit of egg on their face over a recent fumble regarding one such giveaway. It seems that a lack of attention paid to security has allowed millions of activation keys to leak onto the Internet. The keys in question would allow dishonest hooligans to activate DiRT 3 free of charge.

Typically, when a customer participates in one of these giveaways, they are directed to a website where they are asked to fill out a bit of information, and a key is delivered to them. However, in this case, AMD didn’t properly lock down their web server, which allowed savvy web surfers to access their web site’s directory structure and, subsequently, the entire database of keys.

There’s some discrepancy as to how many keys were actually leaked. Some sources indicate that it was around 1.7 million, while others place the number as high as 3 million. In either case, I’m sure Codemasters, the developer behind the DiRT series, thinks that this number is far too high.

Now, even though it might be incredibly easy for you to dig up one of these keys and activate a copy of DiRT 3 on Steam, I wouldn’t suggest it. Tracking these keys is going to be incredibly easy for Steam staffers, and banning your account certainly wouldn’t be out of the question.
