A little over a week ago, complaints started rolling in from individuals who claimed to have been banned for playing Diablo III on Linux. Their theory was that, since they were using WINE to emulate a Windows environment for the game, the system thought they were cheating and so they were banned, unjustly, simply for playing the game through an emulated setup. In other words, a false positive. There was the predictably extreme degree of fan outcry and, even though Linux is not an officially supported platform for the game, Blizzard followed up and decided to try to reproduce the issue themselves: We’ve extensively tested for false positive situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly. We’ve not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings. Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will.
