Bethesda And Mojang Settle “Scrolls” Dispute

Bethesda And Mojang Settle “Scrolls” Dispute

None

The ongoing legal battle between Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, and Bethesda, the developers of The Elder Scrolls series, has finally come to an end. For those of you who don’t remember, Mojang was developing a brand new game called Scrolls, and Bethesda felt that the title was far too close to The Elder Scrolls. According to Notch, the leader of Mojang, they finally reached a settlement.

Notch tweeted the details of the settlement over the weekend. He said that they had to give Bethesda the trademark on “Scrolls” but they get to keep the name for their game. They also had to agree to never make an Elder Scrolls competitor using the name. This is unlikely considering Scrolls wasn’t an American-Style open-ended RPG to begin with.

It’s good to know that this legal battle is over, but fighting legal battles over single words seems kind of foolish to me. How long will it be before someone trademarks the word “The?”
