Black Rock Studios Officially Closing

Black Rock Studios Officially Closing

None

Though Black Rock Studios produced two very well-received games for Disney Interactive Studios (Pure and Split/Second) both of these games failed to meet sales expectations. After some layoffs and re-structuring, Disney has made the decision to close the studio permanently. Black Rock will still be alive for the next 90 days during a “consultation phase,” then they will be closing their doors forever.

The sad story of Black Rock Studios is similar to that of Bizarre Creations, which was closed down by Activision earlier this year. Both studios created critically praised automotive games that just didn’t have the selling power that was expected. It seems the automotive genre is killing off a lot of developers recently. It can definitely be argued that the oversaturation of the genre with series like Gran Turismo, Forza, and Need for Speed, it looks like smaller or even medium-sized developers can’t survive. This is tragic indeed.
