Bugsnax is a 2020 adventure game developed and published by Young Horses. The game began life on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, even proving to be a launch title for the latter. However, it eventually came to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
Overall reception to Bugsnax was quite positive, with the game currently holding a 75 on Metacritic. This doesn’t mean the game is perfect, but there’s certainly a lot to like about the title.
Bugsnax Premise

Bugsnax is played from a first-person perspective, and you must travel around Snaktooth Island to catch and discover 112 species of Bugsnax. At the start of the game, you’re introduced to the SnaxScope, a feature that allows you to scan different Bugsnax and figure out how to capture it. With slingshots, tripwires, and food bait at your disposal, you’ve got to figure out the right way to lure each Bugsnax into your traps. You may even need to use a combination of tools to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Throughout the game, you’ll travel to different biomes, with each playing home to different Bugsnax. They’re not all you’ll find. Scattered around the island, you’ll discover multiple individuals from a lost expedition team, and you must convince them to head back to the hub town of Snaxburg. Once there, they’ll give you sidequests which tell you more about their past. Ultimately the main objective is to find expedition leader Elizabert “Lizbert” Megafig, which is done by locating the previous members of her group and finding out more about them.
Bugsnax Main Characters

Even though the gameplay is definitely the highlight of Bugsnax, the game still has a few interesting characters throughout it’s story. Here are the main duo you need to be aware of before playing the game:
- The Journalist: The Journalist is the protagonist of Bugsnax. They meet and interview the members of Lizbert’s expedition team on Snaktooth Island, and ends up catching a ton of Bugsnax.
- Elizabert “Lizbert” Megafig: Lizbert leads the Bugsnax expedition on Snaktooth Island, and invites the Journalist along for the adventure. She vanishes upon the Journalist’s arrival, sparking a mystery.
While these are the main characters in the story, the 112 different types of Bugsnax are also important characters, as you have to collect all of them throughout the game. These are the ones you can find, as well as the time of day you can find them:

Bugsnax Titles in the Series

©Young Horses – Original
Bugsnax is the first game in the series, although it isn’t the first successful title to come from developer Young Horses. The studio is more known for its 2014 hit Octodad: Dadliest Catch, with Bugsnax representing its next attempt at recapturing that magic.
While we don’t have a sequel yet, there has been an expansion for Bugsnax titled The Isle of Bigsnax. This was a free update to the game, released in 2022.
Between Octodad: Dadliest Catch and Bugsnax, there was a six-year gap, showing this is a developer that likes to take their time with releases. Because of this, it’s impossible to say if we’ll see a sequel to Bugsnax, and it’ll likely be a few years yet before we find out.

Bugsnax Cheat Codes

Although Bugsnax doesn’t technically have cheat codes, the game does have a hidden Debug Mode in the PC version of the game. To open this, press the Left Shift + Right Shift + Pause Break keys on your keyboard at the same time, then find Debug Mode in the game’s pause menu. There, you’ll be able to change the following settings:
- Level Select
- Max Out Inventory
- Transform All Grumpuses
- Complete Pinned Quest
- Unlock All Player Hut
- Unlock All Hats
- Clear Feeding History
Every single level has a few more options than this, specific to that level. This is usually used to debug specific quests, so we don’t need to list them individually. If you do find that a quest is broken in your game, it may be worth checking out. For example, these are the Debug Mode options available specifically for Snaxburg:
- DebugFillDonations
- DebugReturn
- DebugCelebration
- DebugStories
- DebugIntruder
- DebugMajorParty
- DebugQuake
- DebugAllBosses
- DebugInterviewsAndClues
