Night in the Woods is a 2017 adventure game developed by Infinite Fall and published by Finji. Originally released exclusively for PC, the game eventually trickled down to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and mobile.
At first, Night in the Woods began life as a successful Kickstarter project, reaching over $200,000 after an initial goal of $50,000. Its unique art style was immediately striking, winning over backers in huge numbers. Despite being Infinite Fall’s first-ever release, the game was a hit with critics, maintaining an 88 on Metacritic. It’s an impressive number for any developer, let alone for a maiden release.
Night in the Woods Premise
Night in the Woods is a game about exploration and choice, with every decision you make has an impact on the future story. The game takes place over multiple days, where Mae, the protagonist, must move around Possum Springs, talking to individuals and discovering the hidden secrets of the town.
On each day, you get to hang out with different characters. During these hangouts, you’ll learn more about each of the characters, and their storylines unravel over the course of the in-game week. If you don’t hangout with a character, they simply won’t be an important part of that playthrough. The game and its story adapts regardless.
Each characters offers an optional side activity. Ultimately, the amount of content in Night in the Woods is however much you make it. There’s plenty to do, and how much you actually experience all comes down to your own curiosity.
Night in the Woods Main Characters
Night in the Woods has quite a large cast of characters, and you can spend a ton of time with each of them. You can hang out with each of them, getting to know them as much or as little as you’d like. Because of the game’s narrative focus, it’s extremely rewarding to learn more about the main characters in Night in the Woods, as it can actually impact the ending of the game.
- Mae: Mae is the main protagonist of the game. After dropping out from college, she returned to Possum Springs, where she has to unravel some deep personal problems of her own.
- Bea: Bea was Mae’s childhood best friend. When Mae left for college, Bea remained in Possum Springs for personal reasons. She’s surprised by the return of her old friend.
- Gregg: Gregg most often appears alongside his friend Angus, with the duo always getting into mischief together. Despite this, Gregg remains a good friend to Mae.
- Germ: Very little is known about Germ, both by yourself and the other residents of Possum Springs. He serves as a figure of intrigue, giving you motive to investigate further.
Night in the Woods Titles in the Series
As of right now, Night in the Woods remains the only major title in this series. Prior to its release, two companion games were released. However, these were extremely small, and can’t really be seen as major titles. Considering its unique gameplay and art style, it’s a shame that more never came from it. It’s such a unique premise that is ripe for innovation, and it’s surprising that we never got a little more from Night in the Woods as a series.
Publisher of Night in the Woods, Finji, recently revealed a title named Revenant Hill, with an art style that heavily resembles that of the original game. While Revenant Hill will be developed by new studio The Glory Society, you can definitely see how the publisher has looked to capture some of that Night in the Woods magic to this day.
It may seem as though the series is gone before it has really begun. However, in the gaming industry, anything is possible, so if you’re hoping for a sequel, don’t lose hope yet. Stranger things have happened.
- Longest Night (2013)
- Lost Constellation (2014)
- Night in the Woods (2017)
