Catacombs Unveiled, Then Put On Hold

Catacombs Unveiled, Then Put On Hold

None

Siliconera recently reported that Square Enix and Cavia, the developers of Nier, were working on a brand-new shooter called Catacombs. Apparently, it was a dungeon crawling FPS set within a warped basement of a museum cursed by some sort of artifact.

The gameplay of Catacombs revolved around guns that leveled up. As you got kills, your magical guns would increase in capability. For example, the magical shotgun increased its damage and blast radius as it leveled up. Players would also be able to cast spells with magical rings that had a limited amount of charges before they ran out. These spells would do things like heal the party, provide defensive buffs, and more. The biggest twist in this game was the map layout. Unlike other shooters, Catacombs maps would be entirely randomly generated.

Square planned to reveal the game at E3 2011, but never did. The game is well along in development and has a playable build ready. Perhaps we will see the game make an appearance at this year’s E3, but we’re not getting our hopes up.
